The local elections are just around the corner. In Pingtung's Hengchun Township, the competition for township chief is heating up. On the evening of Nov. 8, there was a skirmish between village representatives loyal to incumbent chief Lu Yu-tung, who is seeking reelection, and supporters of an opponent. This incident resulted in physical injuries and mutual lawsuits. Later on, explosives have been thrown at the family home of another candidate, Zhang Rong-zhi. The police are investigating if the two incidents are related.
Two groups get into a shouting match outside the event venue, and soon begin scuffling. On the night of Nov. 8, Hengchun Township chief Lu Yu-tung, who is seeking re-election, asked village representative Cai Xin-jiang to come support him at an event. Outside the event venue, Hengchun Fishermen's Association chairperson Chen Rui-mu and others staged a protest. As Cai was leaving, a man surnamed Jiang assaulted him. Cai suffered a right eye injury.
People should support village representatives who actually do work. I didn't even mention the fishermen's association.
Cai was able to walk to an ambulance, and a hospital check-up did not reveal any serious injuries. He decided to file a lawsuit to denounce election violence. Meanwhile, the association said it was dissatisfied with a long-term smear campaign against it.
He says he was injured. Our fishermen were also injured.
The police are investigating the incident to clarify the facts. Later that day, another incident occurred. Explosives were thrown at the family home of another township chief candidate, Zhang Rong-zhi, perhaps because Zhang has a close relationship with the association.
He said he was a gangster to scare me, and then this explosives incident occurred last night. I believe it was a homemade bomb. I asked the police to solve the case as quickly as possible.
The evidence left at the scene included paper fragments. We didn't find any fragments made of metal or other materials. Our preliminary conclusion is that it was a metal-free lethal firecracker.
There are five candidates vying for the position of Hengchun Township chief, and the competition is extremely fierce. The police are trying to determine if the two incidents are related.
